Using RoBERTa, an AI developed by the Meta Research team, we can categorize Elon’s tweets into emotional categories: positive, neutral, or negative. The program also assigns each tweet a percentage weight, indicating how strongly the emotional tone leans toward a specific category.
It's important to note the limitations of this exercise. As Rotulo explains, “Tweets are different from other types of text data because they’re typically conversational and short.” Additionally, the program appears unable to interpret nuances such as irony or sarcasm.
RoBERTa classifies the majority of Elon’s tweets as neutral. While there are periods where both positive and negative tweets peak, the simultaneous peak in neutral tweets suggests that these spikes are more indicative of increased overall tweeting activity rather than a significant shift in the ratio of "positive" or "negative" tweets.
Adjusting the values as a percentage of total tweets per month provides a clearer perspective. Neutral tweets remain the majority, while positive sentiment consistently outweighs negative.
By further adjusting the data to group tweets by year and excluding the neutral category, we can see that positive tweets are almost five times greater in 2012. While 2022 shows the biggest jump in negative at a ratio of about 1 negative every 2 positive tweets.
Plotting these as line graphs highlights a potential trend. While positive tweets consistently outnumber negative ones each year, the proportion of tweets categorized by RoBERTa as positive appears to be declining over time. Conversely, negative tweets seem to be increasing, though this trend is less pronounced than the decline in positive tweets.

However, over time, the percentage of positive tweets has dropped from 45% of all tweets to just 26%.
It's important to remember the limitations of the algorithm, as well as the unique nature of tweets, which may affect its accuracy. Additionally, Elon’s tweeting volume has significantly increased over the years, and the trend toward more balanced ratios of positive and negative tweets could simply be a byproduct of the larger sample size.
